How to Make Perfect Wild Rice

Wild rice can be tricky to make. You cook it forever and it’s still crunchy, right? This method makes it perfect and fluffy every time, without fail. It is far easier and more dependable to cook wild rice as if it were pasta, using a lot of water and letting the water stay at a full boil until the rice is done.

This is the basic recipe to make wild rice. Add a sauce or additional seasonings according to the flavors of the other dishes you are preparing.

Try wild rice with baked salmon or sautéed chicken and Dijon sauce for a simple and elegant meal.

Cooking  Time

Preparation Time

5 minutes

Servings

Makes about 3 cups wild rice

Equipment

  • 3-quart sauce pan or larger
  • a mesh sieve to strain the rice (the holes in a colander are too large)

  • 1 T Salt
  • 2 quarts water
  • 1 cup wild rice
  • 1 T butter
  • 1 tsp garlic powder

Directions

  1. Put all ingredients in sauce pan and bring to a raging boil.
  2. Cook 45 minutes, until rice begins to “pop” open and look like the picture that I have provided.
  3. Drain through a sieve and return rice to pan.

You can freeze cooked wild rice for up to 3 months and reheat it in the microwave.
